Peace with Pak: Breaking the sound barrier in Bollywood

Maheen Sabeeh

Pakistan, if the ‘50s were all about the queen of melody Nur Jehan, in the ‘60s and ‘70s a newer sound came into our filmi music with names like Ahmed Rushdi, Bangladeshi singing sensation Runa Laila and Sohail Rana ruling the soundboard. The turn for modern pop arrived in the ‘80s when Alamgir first introduced electric synthesizers to Pakistani pop and dekha na tha became an anthem for a new generation and heralded a whole new sound. The wave of disco pop gained steam with Mohammad Ali Shyhaki and reached its zenith with the magic of Nazia and Zoheb Hasan. We were all Disco deewane, so what if it was the Zia era and prohibition was heavily enforced?

All this while, as trends came and went, Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hasan remained extremely popular across the subcontinent.

Bollywood Copying Pakistani Music

LOL

LOL

New Delhi: With a career spanning almost three decades and many awards to his credit, as Anu Malik turned 47th today, the music composer expressed concern over the present state of Bollywood music rueing blatant copying of foreign tunes by today`s musicians.

Malik, who is known for his music in blockbusters like, `Main Hoon Na`, `Border`, `Refugee` to name a few is sad over the present state of music in Indian cinema.

“Melody is lacking in today`s music and I am trying my level best to get that back. The songs which we hear today do not have any life. We still love to listen to the old classics because they had soul,” Malik told reporters.

“It is the age of laptops and Internet where people are lifting foreign songs especially from Pakistani music. With such blatant copying the composers are killing Indian music,” he added.

“I have a vision for our film industry, which is that it should break free of its shackles”
– Shaan

By Usman Ghafoor

mainissue_1

It wasn’t John Abraham of Bollywood. Quite interestingly, Shaan became the first mainstream film actor in the subcontinent to strip before the camera — remember the detention sequences in Khuda Kay Liye? New York’s John and the upcoming Jail’s Neil Nitin Mukesh in a nude shot have all followed much later.

Bait him with that and Shaan near blushes. “Hey, it wasn’t me,” he chortles. “It was Mansoor Khan. By the way, I don’t carry my characters home.” He doesn’t. For someone who jumps from set to set and juggles a slew of films, it wouldn’t be humanly possible.
