Ali Zafar defends Tere Bin Laden

Ali Zafar urged the press to watch Tere Bin and decide for themselves if it deserved to be banned.

Zafar arrived back from India this week and travelled to Karachi to thank the press for their support and discuss the larger issues which had emerged with the film not being cleared for release.

“I directly appeal to the President and the Prime Minister,” Zafar said, “to consider this issue and let the film be screened in Pakistan. If there is a security risk, by that standard we should stop going to mosques, or to schools or anything else. We cannot stop life. It is a 95-minute peace tape and a pro-Pakistan film, and this will generate business for our cinemas.”

The musician highlighted that pirated DVDs of Tere Bin are being openly sold in markets, and that the film is being shown on cable TV channels as well. He waved the pirated DVD and said, “I want you to go watch the film and make a decision yourself.”

Zafar lamented the fact that “If someone wants to legally show a film, they cannot, this piracy is chor bazari.”

“I deserve to fight for this film,” Zafar told journalists. “It is key to show this film in Pakistan because the international media has picked this up as an issue and is saying that ‘Pakistan has limited freedom of expression’ and ‘Pakistan has given into security fears’. If we want to progress then we need to take a stance. We have not been able to create icons in this country because there is no system.”

Zafar referred repeatedly to the fact that the larger issue at hand was about the growth of the film industry in general and how its growth was being stunted. While he believes that “one film cannot revive cinema,” he says it is important to make and show more films so that cinemas could thrive. Zafar said that more cinemas had opened up in Pakistan because of the number of foreign films that were being shown in the country, and says Karachi could become as important a film centre as Mumbai if we could focus on cinema and the arts.

While he has received several Bollywood offers, Zafar denied he was planning to shift to Mumbai, and said while he would travel to any part of the world for work, “my home will always be Lahore.”

He repeatedly referred to the film as a ‘pro-Pakistan, peace tape’ but when asked that the film did not take a direct stance on any issue and should be promoted as a comedy, and not as a pro-Pakistan film, he said, “In India, to make a film that is not anti-Pakistani is pro-Pakistani in itself.” Writer and actor Mohammad Ahmed, who also worked on Urdu diction with the film’s cast, said that they had been very careful to not say anything in the film that was against Pakistan or its ideology.

However, the press conference was dogged with questions of why exactly Tere Bin had been disallowed. While the official reasons cited by the censor board include offensive language and that the film does not portray Pakistan positively, he was at a loss to be able to give any reason for why the film could not be screened. While he has said that he will accept whatever decision the government makes, he does not see any hope for the government changing its stance on the film’s release.

Using a famous television show for promoting a film is not new. As it is believed, the small screen is a perfect medium to grab attention of the general viewers. Using Sony TV’s music reality show ‘Indian Idol-5′ is a trend that is very popular in India but this would be the first time that a Pakistani musician/actor will be a guest and a celebrity Judge on Indian Idol.

Ali Zafar is planning to use Sony TV’s music reality show “Indian Idol 5? to promote his Bollywood debut film “Tere Bin Laden”. He is currently in Mumbai, India, to use music reality show as a platform to create awareness about his movie which has been directed by the Abhishek Sharma.

While talking with Arab News in an interview, Ali Zafar disclosed that his song Dekha will be featured in a Hollywood flick Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps which is set to release in September this year. We have big expectations from the film and hope Ali’s track to get massive exposure, since the track is to appear in sequel of Wall Street (1987) an Oscar winner movie.He also mentioned that he looks forward to do more work for west. This is Ali’s second musical project for an international film, first one being “Tere bin Laden” in which Ali Zafar also acts as a lead role.

A great gig under the sky feels like such a dream come true these days. Amidst the ruckus that surrounds the industry, doubt and uncertainly about the future, a live musical night is a welcome diversion. Music encompasses varying properties; pitch and notes, emotions and the ability to move us in ways words can`t. And so when that musician is Ali Zafar, a man who has proven with time that the only way is up, it makes the wait almost worth it.

Recently Ali Zafar rocked Lahore, more specifically a flock of female fans that make up the student population of Kinnaird College. Ali Zafar undoubtedly lit up Kinnaird amphitheatre on April 30. The entry point was also interesting. Mobilink Jazz, who relatively recently roped in Ali Zafar as their brand ambassador were behind the show. For the fans, this was a good thing. The entry to the show was free with student identification while the faculty were allowed to bring (female) guests.

Lucky me.

With Ali smiling down from Jazz posters at delirious college girls from every tree, wall and bathroom door, spotlights were put up by the organisers on bushes, rockeries and all along the path leading to the amphitheatre.

A whole carnival of food stalls from famous chains, drinks and ice cream waalas and a qulfi waala were set up outside catering to people`s taste buds. We reached the venue at 7:15 as show timings were from 7-10 pm and the crowd had arrived with their perfect hair, dresses, accessories, digital cameras, iPhones, Blackberries and lots of youthful energy. It was a pleasant surprise that the amphitheatre was covered with (red) carpets and comfy cushions which made it much easier to sit and proved once again that cell phone companies probably can`t even spell `Economic Recession`. Not that anyone`s complaining.

The opening act was announced to be a guy called Fahad Hasan at around 7:40 and KC girls were ready to kick off the dance and scream fest. Fahad Hasan turned out to be a very young, tall, slim guy in a black T-shirt and jeans with a pleasant face and smile. It was reported that he had performed at the college in a previous event so the students not only knew him, it looked like they liked him too and one came to know the reason very soon. He greeted the girls with great confidence and ease, urging them to give him their best screams and then he started singing!

One has to admit that there are always gems amongst us waiting to be discovered and this guy is one of them. With very strong vocal chords and amazing voice control he started to sing one of his original songs while his band members played superbly. He jumped, danced and ran all around on stage without his vocals ever faltering or losing breath. It was surprising to hear that big voice coming out of his skinny physique, reminding one of Roxen`s vocalist Mustafa Zahid. He went on to sing Bollywood hits `Kya Mujhay Pyar Hai` and `Dhan Te Nan` before the organisers, for some odd reason, decided to take a 15 minute Azaan break. This robbed the poor guy of precious time and he came back after 15 minutes with his last song `Mun ki Pyass`. It was an original and it was fantastic. Giving it his all and making the crowd clap and dance with him, he exited the stage thanking them and the organisers at whom one wanted to yell out to: YOU SHOULD`VE LET HIM SING FOR THOSE 15 MINUTES!

The crowd now started cheering for Ali Zafar who had flown in from Bangkok after a shoot. The two College Student Council members hosting the event didn`t delay Ali`s entry and asked the crowd to count to three with them loudly and voila! The star we had all come to see live appeared amidst deafening screams and cheers wearing a white deep V necked shirt, black jeans and boots at exact 8:29. He looked like the ultimate boy next door, a gorgeous super model and a rock star all at the same time and why not? He is all of those things. With superb seats near the stage (perks of being a faculty guest), one was able to observe and check him out (read ogle) to the max. No matter how cheesy this sounds, there`s no denying that Ali is much much younger, boyish and absolutely gorgeous in real life. Cameras have never done justice to him.

More appealing was the fact that Ali had a killer combination of musicians playing for him which included Shallum Xavier from Fuzon playing lead guitars, Aaroh`s drummer Jason, superb dhol, Moon on keyboards and bongo player Asif and Tahir on Bass. Shallum is a huge celebrity and it was a treat to get to see him play live and that too with Ali Zafar. It`s an interesting live collaboration. He was greeted with loud cheers and cat calls while he took his place on stage. Ali uttered an impressed `Wow` while taking a look at the packed amphitheatre and promised to make it the best night of our lives to date. He started humming `Chal Dil Meray` from the middle before launching in to it with full force from the beginning with the crowd singing along at the top of their voices. One has to appreciate the great sound system put up which did not betray once throughout the evening and Ali`s voice and all the instruments playing sounded crystal clear and very loud. No wonder Ali had really smart earplugs in place. `Rangeen` and `Bachna Ae Haseeno` followed with Ali cheekily pointing at the girls in the former and at himself in the latter. After this came the treat that one had been waiting for and it was expected after Ali`s now famous Mohatta Palace performance a few weeks ago, the tribute to our pop/rock stars medley. Starting with the legendry Alamgir`s `Keh Dena` it included Nazia Hasan, Vital Signs, Sajjad Ali, Hadiqa Kiyani, Junoon, Strings, Awaz, Fakhir, Atif Aslam, Jal and of course Fuzon in the end with Ali cheering on Shallum standing next to him. It was no doubt a fantastic performance and it was really wonderful how Ali made all these songs his own, never letting songs like `Dupatta Mera Mal Mal Ka` and `Boom Boom` sounding odd, coming from a male singer.

Ali has been getting a lot of appreciation lately for his fantastic live singing skills and even more wonderful voice control and stronger vocal chords. This was the highlight of this concert too as he appeared completely in control of his voice and took the songs to different pitches and levels at his own sweet will.

`Yaar Dhadee` and `Dastaan-e-Ishq` from his Coke Studio performance followed the brilliant tribute and needless to say, he sang them with all his heart and it felt like a lucky, privileged moment to hear the gems we fell in love with on television. The crowd was now screaming for his more popular hits and he obliged them with a mellow rendition of `Jugnoo Say Bhar Lay Aanchal` which always draws great reaction from teenaged girls but Ali was also aware of the older faculty members in the audience sitting down quietly smiling at him. He greeted them saying `auntian baithi hue hain tou kuch puranay ganay inn kay liyay`.

`Aap Yahan Ayay Tou` was dedicated to them followed by `Aasmaan` and `Dekha` which saw Ali move and dance, point and jump with every beat. This song featured three leading ladies (Reema, Meera and Aaminah Haq) grooving with Ali in different avatars. And it seemed Ali had lots of fun making it.

It was close to 10 pm and everyone knew that the best was coming up. `Channo` was finally here. Even after all these years it`s still the most fun song at a live performance and this show was no exception. Its famous infectious melody started playing and the scream and dance routine reached new heights. Ali`s amazing dholki and bongo player Mr Asif really shone on this song. With mikes fitted on both sides of his dholki, he made it a real treat with his excellent playing. It was not over though yet. The last song of the evening was `Masti` which electrified the atmosphere even further as now even the `Aunties` stood up and clapped with the youngsters!

The night ended in a mad climax featuring Jason and Asif saab going crazy on their instruments and girls cheering and clapping throughout. Ali thanked the crowd and exited the stage at exactly 10:09 pm. The 7 to 10 pm promise had come through with an incredible evening of live music packed in the said three hours. If that`s what it takes to entertain crowds; I personally have no problems with pop/rock stars endorsing mega rich multi nationals.

Ali Zafar has sung two songs for his upcoming and most awaited film of 2010, ‘Tere Bin Laden‘ . His solo song is ‘I Love Amreeka‘ and ‘Ullu Da Pattha‘ is his duet with Shanker Mahadevan. The film is slated to release worldwide on July 16th 2010.
